An infrared camera is used to measure the temperature of the skin on the breast’s surface. Heat is an indication that inflammation exists, and typically inflammation is present in precancerous and cancerous cells. This method also detects abnormal blood supply in the breasts which may be indicative of cancer. In addition, thermography has the potential to detect breast cell anomalies long before mammography can detect cancer. It is painless and no radiation or breast compression is involved. If abnormalities are detected a mammogram would be recommended. Also, lifestyle changes which improve the health of breasts can be implemented proactively.
